Anime Reviews

Okay, here's the deal. I'm going to try my hardest to write reviews that give little or nothing away about the plot line of the series/movie. These reviews reflect my thoughts and feelings about the series and can be very opinionated, just like me! Thankfully I have only invested time and money into one series that I regret buying (don't ask), so most of the reviews here are actually going to say good things. I hope my luck holds out, but we will see. The rating system is a just like school grades, you know, A through F.

Fushigi Yugi
Please Save My Earth
The Slayers

Fushigi Yugi/Mysterious Play

Released by: Poineer
Rating: A
One of my all time favorite series, "Fushigi Yugi" has one little flaw that I found and that is the way it ended, that's why it only gets an A an not an A+. The series itself has a very "Never-ending Story" feel to it. It starts out with the main character, Yuki Miaka and her best-friend, Hongo Yui getting sucked into a book. (Yeah, I know it's been done before but hey it still make for a great story.) Then before the end, the series takes you on an emotional ride filled with love, friendship, betrayel, revenge, and jealousy. Just like in life each character in the series has their own story, although most don't reveal themselves until the OAV's, and some characteristics that can be seen as annoyances. A couple of good examples of this are Hotohori's narcissism, and Tamahome's . These character flaws however, are one of the things that make these characters so likeable. After all, a perfect character is kind of boring. Now as for to voices, my copy of the series is subtitled, but my mom picked up the DVD box sets, so I have had the opportunity to listen to both the Japanese voice cast as well as the English voice cast. I have to say I'm glad that I spent the extra $5 to get the subbed version. I don't like the English voices at all. With fifty-two (52) television episodes and nine (9) OAV episodes, this series is a time consuming venture as well as an emotional roller coaster, but all and all well worth the trip.

Please Save My Earth

Released by: Viz
Rating: B+
At only six (6) episodes, this short series could stand to be a little longer. I know there is a lot more story line out there that just has not been put to film. The series moves so fast and has so many characters that it's sometimes it's hard to keep the characters names straight, especially when each character has two names. I am very interested in finding the manga that the series was made from just to answer some to the question that the anime left me with. I this case I bought the DVD (I really love that PS2, it's great) so I got all six (6) episodes on one disc. Plus I got a character reference section which was a blessing, and a FAQ section which helped to answer some of my questions. As for the voice cast, I have yet to watch it subtitled but that will be how I watch it next time (right after I finish watching "Fushigi Yugi" for the fourth or fifth time). The English voices are okay, but I don't have anything to compare them to yet so...

The Slayer

Released by: Software Sculptures
Rating: B
The best way to describe this series is an epic role-playing adventure that is afraid to get too serious. From start to finish when ever this series starts to that itself too seriously one of the repeating jokes will popup and it goes right back to just plan fun. The series follow the adventures of Lina Inverse, hot-tempered (dodges a fireball) sorceress (I'd go on but...), and Company as they try to solve whatever puzzel that fate as thrown their way. Now that maybe, fighting a Dark Lord, trying to decifer the motives of a certain Mysterious Priest or most inportantly finding the best place to eat. The rating on the back of the box is three (3) and up, but while there is nothing really to bad in this series, some of the jokes would go way over a three (3) year olds head. To be honest this is one of the very first anime series that I was exposed to and it's also on of the two that got me hooked. (The other series was Ranma 1/2) Now that it has finally come to a conclusion, I'm almost sad. No more new adventures with some of my favorite characters. (sniffle, sniffle) Now in the voice acting catogory, the English cast is okay, I like some of the original voices better but all in all the dubbed versions not to bad.

Xenogears
Lunar: Complete Series
Suikoden/Suikoden 2

Xenogears

Released by: Squaresoft Rating: A
Ahh, yes. "Xenogears." This game rocks. This is my all time favorite game. Okay now that, that's off my chest, on with the review...
This game blows everything that Square did before it right out of the water. That said I do have one complaint with it, the second half of the game is very linear. Unlike the first half where you have find the place to visit, to unravel the next part of the story, the second half just takes you there. In a very "Evangalion" way the second half of the story is told to you by your characters as they sit in a black void on a chair. The only thing the player has to do is fight the boss fights. If the second half had been like the first half, the game might have been three (3) of four (4) discs long. That little flaw is what is keeping this game from receiving an A+. Even with that, after play it though about five (5) times, I'm still ready to replay it again at anytime. This is one of the few games that I have played that has forced me to stay up until five (5) or six (6) o'clock in the morning just to see what was going to happen next. Most games have at least one section that I really don't like to play though, in "Final Fantasy Six (6)" it was the Magitek Factory, and in "Final Fantasy Seven (7)" it was the forty-five (45) minute autoplay sequence at the top of the Whirlwind Maze, but I can't think of one section of this game that I really dislike playing through. This is games is a must play if only to listen to the amazing soundtrack. This is one of the only games that I have the soundtrack for and after having it for over a year now it's still one of my most listened to CDs. Okay in case you can't tell by now I strongly recommend this game and hey there is suppost to be a 'sequal' coming out in 2002. It's not being done by Square. The original creater of the story is making it. I can't wait!
